Getting a house/allocations

Social housing allocations policies

This is the process landlords use to offer and provide people with a house.

Allocations systems are generally points based which means that people with the most needs have the highest number of points.

Points are given to applicants for different reasons e.g. if they have a medical condition, if they are homeless or living in crowded conditions etc.

Some Council’s may have a special allocations policy for care leavers.

Common Housing Registers

A Common Housing Register is where several landlords join together so there is only 1 application form and shared housing list/register.

It means: you can generally apply for a Council or Housing Association property through any landlord that is part of the CHR.

Common Housing Register application forms may be available online as well as from offices/public buildings.
Landlords will try and offer people a property that meets their needs e.g. in a suitable location and is close to services and existing networks and support if needed.
