Making my tenancy work for me - An E-Learning module and step by step guide

THE HUB
The main focus of Housing Options approaches is to make better use of housing – owned by Registered Social Landlords (local authorities and housing associations) or Private Landlords. As well as owner occupation, there are three different types of landlords who rent out housing stock.
Renting from a local authority

Offered to people with a demonstrable housing need. Local authority rents are amongst the lowest in the rented sector. The amount of local authority stock has fallen over the years and in some areas is fairly limited with long waiting lists.
Renting from a housing association

Housing Associations are also registered social landlords. The rents that housing associations charge are quite varied. Some of their weekly charges are at a similar level to local authorities and some may be ‘market rent’ which is a higher level.
Renting from a private landlord

Private landlords operate their housing stock as a business and the rents that they charge are often at market value so may not be affordable for some people.
Local authorities and housing associations have similar types of housing stock on offer. They may work together to rehouse homeless people (through ‘nominations’ or ‘section 5 referrals’).
