Ben’s Story

Ben had lived in care since he was ten. He had lived in both residential and foster homes. He had now reached the age of 19.

That meant that the local authority social work department who had acted as his ‘parent’ had no further responsibilities toward him.

Ben’s social worker, Joan was keen to get him a placement which would help him towards renting a house from the local council or housing associations.

Ben went along to see the homeless officer that Joan had spoken to.

The homeless officer asked Ben whether he had heard about flat sharing.

They went through the details of this, what it would mean to share a flat with another young person before moving into a house.

The homeless officer then arranged for Ben to meet a young person, Darrin who was looking for a flat mate.
